Subs and other costs

Subscriptions or 'subs' are paid by each member of our group. The committee try to ensure the price members pay are fair and good value for money. Subs pays for the general running of the HQ (electricty, heating, insurances etc), Scout Association fees (insurances, capitation fee) and for running of the programme members experience each week which includes any resources they use and badges.

Our current subs is £12.50 per member per month for 12 months a year.

There are sometimes additional costs in scouting which may include competitions, camps, day trips, Gang Show etc but parents will always be advised of these well in advance and there is usually a payment plan available for these through our Online Scout Manager (OSM) payment and information sharing system.

Scouting in general including the 5th Gosport Sea Scout Group, rely on volunteers to run the group so no adults are paid for their time.

We would never like to think that a member of our group is excluded from Scouting because of financial reasons. If you are struggling to cover costs you can speak directly to the section leader or make contact with our Group Section Leader, Allan Davey who can discuss ways we can support you. Discussions will be treated with confidence.

Parent support and volunteering

All of our sections are 100% volunteers. This means we all have lives out of scouting too which is why we always need parents and families to help. The more help we have, the better our 5th scouting community is! Help comes in all shapes and sizes and we will never turn away volunteers. We need parents to attend weekly meetings as volunteer helpers or train to become uniformed leaders, be part of our regular or ad hoc maintenance team, help behind the scenes with fundraising, share your expertise with a section to help with a badge or become a committee member. Not only will you be contrubuting to the success of the group and therefore the fabulous opporunities young people in the 5th are offered but you too will make friends and have opportunities to give something back to the community.

If you would like to volunteer in any capacity you can speak to any section leader or contact our Committee chair Tom Barnett.

The 5th Sea Scout Group Committee

Scouts is a charity meaning we must have a committee to run things behind the scenes. We generally meet monthly to talk all things scouting and to find ways to improve our group, support our leaders and parents. We look forward to welcoming new members at any time.

Online Scout Manager

The 5th Sea Scout Group use Online Scout Manager (OSM) to help the leaders communicate with families. Leaders will give you this information when you join their section. OSM is invaluable to parents as it gives you information about forthcoming events and programmes, trip and camp details including permissions, enables you to keep personal information up to date and make payments for anothing your young person is involved with, including subs.
